Noticing small pleasures turns out to be one of the (few) pluses of the pandemic. Here in Northern California, if we wake up to a blue sky, it’s going to be a good day. If the avocados at the corner market are ripe—hurray! We had an outdoor cocktail hour with some friends—life is good! We take our pleasures where we can find them these days and, without sounding like a pollyanna, that is a good thing.

We have cut back on watching cable news. There is no joy to be found in the political situation; it’s an act of self-preservation to turn to another channel. I am having difficulty following tricky plots in English mysteries, so I bought a copy of A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II by Sonia Purnell. It is a gripping story but from day to day I can’t tell one alias from another. For once, I am simply letting the names wash over me and just following the story. Reading about France during World War II is enough to make anyone appreciate simple pleasures and the relative easiness of a straightforward pandemic.
Other small pleasures: hanging out with my cat, who has gained weight and now is a whopping 17 lbs. Hanging out is about all he can do these days. Watching a few shows such as Taco Chronicles (delicious!), The Yorkshire Vet (charming and educational, too), Succession (over the top and fun to watch). Reconnecting with the UPS guy (I worried he was sick but he had been switched temporarily to a different route). Organizing my thousands of photos; they are pleasant memories of good times in far-away places.
And what about you? What are your simple pleasures these days?
HAVE A GOOD WEEK!
